Carrier Appointment
The contractual authority granted by an insurer allowing an agency to sell and service its products, with agreed commission terms.
An appointment sets out what the agency may bind, the commission schedule, production expectations, and the terms on which either side may terminate. Most states require appointments to be filed with the insurance department.
Appointments are worth auditing periodically. Each one carries administrative overhead and sometimes a production minimum, and agencies commonly hold appointments they no longer meaningfully use — while the commission schedules attached to them remain the reference point for verifying every statement the carrier sends.
